Our Story

Built on a quiet stretch of coastline.

Aethel began as a single wooden deck in 1994. Thirty summers later, the rhythm hasn’t changed.
We didn’t set out to build a beach club. We set out to build a place where the day could be spent without a watch — where lunch could become aperitivo, where a swim could become an afternoon.
The kitchen takes its cue from what the boats bring in by 7am. The bar leans on coastal botanicals — wild thyme, blood orange, fennel pollen — and the cellar reads like a small map of southern Italy.
Above all, Aethel is small on purpose. Forty-two sunbeds, six cabanas, one dining room. Enough to be alive, not so much that you ever feel lost in it.
The Place

On the rocks south of Positano, at the bend in the road.

A sheltered cove with deep water at the edge of the deck. Two bays of fine sand. A pine forest behind the kitchen. The walk down is shaded; the walk back up is forgiving.
The People

A team that mostly grew up within sight of this water.

Our chef trained in Naples, our sommelier on the Aeolian islands, our resident DJ at home in Berlin. The thread that holds them together is care — for the room, for the regulars, for the days that ought to feel longer than they are.
